Chords I7 and IV7 in major keys and III7 and VI7 in minor keys are known as major sevenths. The third and the the seventh above the root are major intervals - hence the name. Although they can resolve like a dominant seventh (as in the examples to the below), major sevenths are often the result of voice-leading embellishments. An example might be the appoggiatura in the example to the right.
